Google Business Profile for Doctors: A Practical Setup Guide

How Indian doctors and clinics can set up and optimise a Google Business Profile to help nearby patients find them, with ethical tips that respect medical advertising norms.

When someone in your area searches "child specialist near me" or "skin doctor in [your locality]", Google often shows a map with a few clinics. Those listings come from Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business). For most clinics, it is the single most useful free online presence you can have.

This guide explains how to set it up and keep it useful for patients, while staying within the ethical expectations for doctors in India.

A note on medical ethics and advertising

Indian medical ethics regulations place limits on how doctors may advertise and solicit patients. Guidance has generally allowed doctors to share factual information, such as name, qualifications, specialty, clinic address, timings and fees, while discouraging self-promotion, exaggerated claims, and soliciting patients. Rules have been revised over time, so read the current NMC guidance and keep your profile factual and modest. A Google Business Profile used this way is essentially a digital signboard.

Step 1: Claim or create your profile

  1. Search for your clinic name on Google Maps. If a listing already exists, claim it. Otherwise, create a new one.
  2. Sign in with a Google account that belongs to the clinic (not a staff member's personal account), so you do not lose access if someone leaves.
  3. Follow Google's verification process. Methods vary and may include a video, phone or postcard. Have your signboard and clinic documents ready.

Tip: if you practise at more than one location, each physical clinic usually needs its own profile. Follow Google's current guidelines for practitioners and multi-doctor practices.

Step 2: Get the basics exactly right

  • Name: use your real clinic name as it appears on your signboard. Do not stuff keywords like "Best Skin Clinic" into it; Google may penalise it, and it also conflicts with ethical norms.
  • Category: choose the most accurate primary category, such as "Pediatrician", "Dermatologist" or "Dental clinic". Add secondary categories only if they are true.
  • Address and map pin: place the pin precisely on your entrance. Add landmarks in the address if helpful.
  • Phone number: use the number your front desk actually answers.
  • Hours: list your morning and evening sessions separately. Update special hours for holidays and festivals.
  • Website or booking link: add a link where patients can book or learn more.

Step 3: Write a factual description

Describe what you do in plain language. Include:

  • Doctor name(s), qualifications and specialty
  • Services commonly offered at the clinic
  • Languages spoken
  • Whether walk-ins are accepted and how tokens work

Avoid superlatives, guarantees of cure, or comparisons with other doctors.

Step 4: Add useful photos

  • The clinic exterior and signboard, so patients can recognise it from the road.
  • The reception and waiting area.
  • Accessibility features, such as a ramp or lift, if available.

Never post photos of patients or anything that could identify them.

Step 5: Add a booking link

Google Business Profile allows you to add a link for appointments. If you have an online booking page, add it here so patients searching on Google can book directly.

With MedPrax OPD's online booking page (Pro plan), you get a personal link that you can add to your Google Business Profile. Patients choose a day and a morning or evening session, the request appears in your dashboard, and the page shows the live "now serving" token so patients can time their visit.

Step 6: Reviews, handled carefully

Reviews influence how patients choose, but they need care in a medical setting.

  • Do not buy or fake reviews. It violates Google's policies and can damage your reputation.
  • Do not offer incentives in exchange for reviews.
  • It is reasonable to let patients know they can leave feedback if they wish.
  • Reply politely and generically. Never confirm that a reviewer is your patient or discuss any clinical detail in a public reply. That would breach confidentiality.
  • For a negative review, a short reply such as "We are sorry to hear about your experience. Please contact the clinic so we can understand your concern" is usually best.

Step 7: Keep it updated

  • Update hours before holidays and when you travel.
  • Answer questions in the Q&A section factually, such as parking or whether walk-ins are accepted.
  • Check every couple of months that nobody has suggested incorrect edits to your listing.

Step 8: Connect the offline and online

Your Google profile works best when everything else is consistent:

  • Same clinic name, address and phone on your signboard, prescription letterhead, WhatsApp and social media.
  • Put a QR code for your booking page at reception and on the back of your visiting card. MedPrax OPD provides a printable QR for your booking link.
  • Share the booking link on your clinic's WhatsApp status or Instagram bio.

What patients look for on your profile

Think about the questions a patient has when deciding whether to visit. A good profile answers them before they need to call:

  • Is the clinic open now? Accurate session hours matter most.
  • How do I get there? A precise pin, landmark and photo of the entrance.
  • Do I need an appointment? Say clearly whether walk-ins are welcome and whether online booking is available.
  • What is the fee? If you are comfortable sharing it, a factual mention of your consultation fee reduces calls to the front desk.
  • How long will I wait? A booking page with a live "now serving" token helps patients plan.

Common mistakes

  • Keyword-stuffed names
  • Wrong or outdated timings
  • A profile owned by an ex-employee's account
  • Replying to reviews with clinical details
  • Duplicate listings for the same clinic

Summary checklist

  1. Claim and verify with a clinic-owned Google account.
  2. Accurate name, category, address, pin, phone and session hours.
  3. Factual description and real clinic photos.
  4. Booking link added.
  5. Reviews handled ethically and confidentially.
  6. Updated regularly, especially around holidays.
